We live in a disposable world: televisions, radios, dvd players, marriages. When something breaks or stops working, we decide it’s easier, and perhaps cheaper, to throw it out rather than get it fixed. With appliances and such, this is usually true. Marriages are a different matter and we may talk about that at a later time.
We don’t give a second thought to tossing a broken toaster into the trash can because a new one is inexpensive and easily purchased at the nearby department store. I once had a motor for my clothes dryer go bad and a friend and I spend a couple of hours trying to get to the motor to have it re-built, only to find out the motor was built in such a way it was not serviceable. It was designed and manufactured to be disposable when it stopped working.
An appliance is one thing; but we often treat other, more important objects as disposable.
Too many people act as if their lives were disposable. I’m not talking about the thrill-seekers who jump out of perfectly good planes, or climb mountains, or such things. I’m talking about the way some people live their daily lives, the things they abuse their bodies with, the decisions they make without regard to the future.
Drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, and tobacco all can shorten someone’s expected lifespan. But so can ignoring health problems or symptoms. I’m bad about doctors. I’m the “typical male” who won’t go to the doctor, no matter what. Then by the time I go, the illness has only gotten worse and what was once easily treatable is now a more serious problem.
We have been born into one body. This is it; this is what we have to work with. Are we living our lives as if our bodies were easily disposable? Yes, eventually, our bodies will wear out and death is appointed for all men (Hebrews 9: 27).
However, of greater concern is treating our souls as if they’re disposable. Just as we are born into one body, we have been given one soul. One big difference is that the body will die and decay, the soul will live eternally.
How do we treat our souls as if they’re disposable? When we don’t consider the reality of eternity, when we make decisions without regard to the Word of GOD, when we live as if this life is all there is. That’s how.
Our time on this earth is short; eternity is without end. Our souls will continue on through eternity and the decisions we make during our short time on earth determines how our souls will spend eternity.
